Solace is a space where young adults suffering terminal illnesses between the ages of 14 and 25 - a demographic that is typically disregarded in hospice design - can come together to support one another.
A carved mass of rammed earth and a flowing roof mirrors the mountainous landscape linking guests to the surroundings and defines this safe refuge. Two circular walls radiate from a central courtyard, which serves as a connecting point between the outer social gathering spaces and the inner space characterized by private alcoves. The young adults can see each other beyond the courtyard as they occupy these voids. Even when they are alone, this constant visibility creates a sense of security. When the core is empty, it symbolizes uncertainty in people’s lives; but, when it is occupied, it becomes a sign of strength and unity. Solace actively promotes life both within and around it.
